This is the Best Photography section of the Best NWT Blogs contest. Please head over to the contest site for all of the results.

As a Canadian, I am required to say that this was difficult, but it really was.

Of the four entries in this category, three are no longer what I would consider “NWT blogs”, meaning that they are not currently about the NWT or maintained by a person who is currently in the NWT. In an effort to be fair, I have decided to review only the photography that was either taken in the NWT or posted while the blogger was in the NWT. I will briefly review the three non-winners and then the winner of this category. I should be clear that I have no particular expertise in photography other than the photojournalism courses that were required for my degree. I have never worked as a photographer, but like most community reporters, I was required to shoot news photos when I worked for weekly papers. I consider myself an amateur and others may disagree with me. Unfortunately for those people, I am the judge and my decision is final.
Sur les routes de l’Asie: I love the photography on this blog, but I do not consider it an NWT blog. I should be clear that I am only speaking for this particular category: other judges may feel that it is appropriate for their categories. For this reason, I have decided that it cannot win Best Photography. Sorry, Rudy and Mylene. You look like you are having a great time.
City of Yellowknife Canada Garbage Dump: This photoblog is about the southern media’s favourite spot in the NWT: the Yellowknife dump. You really can find anything there if you’re willing to put a bit of effort in. This blog is definitely unique, and I wish it was updated more often. With more entries, this could be a real competitor next year.
Life in Inuvik, Northwest Territories: This blog has been inactive for a few months since Phil left the NWT. It was one of my favourite sites while he was here, though, and he won Best Photography in the first NWT Blogs contest. I really like the shots of everyday objects around Inuvik. There’s nothing glitzy here; it’s pure photoblog. I love it. We miss you, Phil!
And the winner of Best NWT Photography:
Dusty Sensor: This is no longer an NWT blog, so when I was reviewing the entries, I decided that I would only look at photos from before November, when the blogger announced that he was leaving the NWT. Still, this was the clear winner of the category. Great photos from all over the western arctic (including a few shots of Yukon, Nunavut and Alaska that I did not include when I was reviewing the entries). My favourite shot is the one of the frozen waterfall near Ulukhaktok, but I love the photos of the northern NWT. Great work. I’m sorry to see you go.
Lee: While I was in Vegas, I put together an extremely classy prize package. You will have the fluffiest car dice in the Eastern Hemisphere. Everyone will want to know where you got them, and you’ll just nod knowingly and tell them that you won a contest on the other side of the world. I’ll e-mail you.

Boohoohoo I’m so sad… Everyone disqualified Mylene and yet she is still, legally, ordinarily resident in the NWT since she’s just on a long vacation, whereas that Dusty Sensor guy actually moved away, so technically, he should be disqualified, not her.

I should have nominated myself, I could have won by default since I REALLY live in the NWT. :)

Yeah, I thought about this for a long time before deciding that her blog isn’t an NWT blog, at least the way I defined it in my head for this category. It was set up to tell the story of her trip to other parts of the world. A great blog, but not an NWT blog.

This was a tough category, because only one of the people is actually living here now. I also had to make a decision about whether this category should be strictly about the best photography or should recognise the best “photoblogger”.

Maybe next time you can have two categories.

    1. best photoblog
    2. best photography on a non-photoblog

    Actually, four categories.

    3. best photography OF THE NWT
    4. best dog photography

Although, Laura’s bunnies are pretty cute too.

Speaking of which, I think by this time next year there will be enough of us making LOLZ to have our own category. :)
